2026 comparison

Complement vs Articulate Storyline: the 2026 comparison

Two opposing philosophies: Storyline's bespoke control versus Complement's speed and conversational AI. Here's how to choose.

Comparison edited by Complement, last updated July 2026.

In short.

Choose Storyline 360 if you need pixel-perfect custom interactions, complex branched software simulations, and production time isn't a constraint. Choose Complement if you want to build a module in ~1h30 where the learner dialogues with an AI and is assessed orally, with hosting in France.

Public prices as observed in July 2026, subject to change — check the vendor's website. Storyline 360 is sold within the Articulate 360 subscription (alongside Rise 360). The creation time is a Complement estimate, varying with complexity.

Creation & speed

Storyline 360 designs modules "slide by slide." That's what makes it powerful — every object, trigger and variable is configurable — but also what makes it costly in time: producing one hour of rich module often takes several dozen hours of work. Its AI Assistant speeds up certain steps (drafts, quizzes, synthetic voice), without changing the manual authoring logic.

Complement starts from the other end: you import a PowerPoint or a PDF, and the AI generates a complete conversational module in about 1h30 (based on our measurements, varying with complexity). The goal isn't pixel-perfect control, but the fast production of engaging content.

Engagement & pedagogy

Storyline offers rich interactivity — branching scenarios, drag-and-drop, simulations — but the learner stays in a click-and-multiple-choice logic. Assessment happens through closed questions.

Complement bets on conversational interaction: the learner exchanges with an AI avatar that responds, prompts and adapts, then is assessed orally. It's active pedagogy, closer to an interview than a questionnaire, and analytics let you improve the module continuously.

Integrations & standards

Storyline exports to SCORM, xAPI and AICC: a broad range of standards that drops into almost any LMS. That's an asset if your ecosystem requires it.

Complement exports to SCORM and integrates via LTI 1.3, and can also serve directly as a platform (without a third-party LMS). A differentiating point for European organisations: the data is hosted in France (GDPR), whereas Articulate relies on US infrastructure with no EU hosting guarantee.

Pricing & model

Storyline 360 is paid via the Articulate 360 subscription, from around $1,449/user/year (as observed in July 2026), billed per designer — regardless of the number of learners.

Complement offers two models: by usage (€5/h/learner, ideal for POCs) or by learner licence (€6/learner/month on an annual basis, for cohorts), with a designer licence at €39/month. The cost is therefore tied to usage or learners rather than the number of designers — better suited when few people create for many learners. See our pricing.

When to choose Storyline over Complement

Let's be honest: Storyline remains the better choice in several cases.

  • You design software simulations or very fine-grained custom interactions (triggers, variables, multiple states).
  • You need complex branching scenarios and pixel-by-pixel control of the rendering.
  • Your team already masters the Articulate ecosystem and has the production time required.
  • You need to produce on desktop, offline, and export to AICC or advanced xAPI.

When Complement is the better choice

  • You want to produce fast — a module in ~1h30 from existing material.
  • You're looking for real conversational engagement and oral assessment, not just multiple-choice quizzes.
  • You train cohorts and want a cost tied to learners or usage.
  • Hosting in France (GDPR) and measuring learning outcomes are important criteria.

Frequently asked questions

Can Complement replace Storyline?

For the majority of training needs — modules built from existing material, quizzes, scenarios and assessment — yes: Complement creates a complete module in about 1h30, where Storyline often requires several dozen hours. Storyline remains preferable if you need pixel-perfect custom interactions or highly complex branched software simulations.

Can you export to SCORM like with Storyline?

Yes. Complement exports to SCORM and integrates with your LMS via LTI 1.3. Storyline exports to SCORM, xAPI and AICC. In both cases, your modules drop into an existing LMS; Complement can also be used directly as a platform.

Does Storyline offer a conversational AI avatar?

Storyline 360 has added an "AI Assistant" that helps generate drafts, quizzes and synthetic voice during authoring. But to our knowledge, as of July 2026, it does not offer an AI avatar that dialogues with the learner in real time, nor oral assessment — that is what Complement does.

How much does Storyline 360 cost compared to Complement?

Storyline 360 is sold within the Articulate 360 subscription, from around $1,449/user/year (as observed in July 2026), billed per designer. Complement charges by usage (€5/h/learner) or by learner licence (€6/learner/month on an annual basis), with a designer licence at €39/month. The models differ: cost per designer with Storyline, cost tied to usage or learners with Complement.
